Financial Aid for the University of California Education Abroad Program (EAP)
While you are on an EAP program, you continue to pay UC tuition and fees, so you are still a UC student when considering financial aid and scholarship status. Depending on the cost of living in each country, the cost of many programs is comparable to the cost of staying at UCSD. Some are even cheaper. Once you are accepted to an EAP program, your financial aid will be automatically re-packaged according to the cost of your program.
Financial Aid for the Opportunities Abroad Program (OAP)
While you are on OAP program, you don’t pay UC fees, but you can still use federal and state financial aid as determined by the FAFSA. Your Programs Abroad advisor will explain the required paperwork to you, and UCSD can still disburse these funds to you while you are abroad. Financial aid may also be available through the sponsoring institution, but you cannot receive aid through both UCSD and the sponsoring institution at the same time.
Financial Aid for Global Seminars (GS)
While you are on a UC San Diego Global Seminar (GS) program, you continue to pay UC tuition and fees, as well as administrative and program fees. You are still a UCSD student when considering financial aid and scholarship status. Students with financial need may apply federal, state, and institutional financial aid towards the cost of the Global Seminar.
GS students must separately apply for FAFSA as well as summer Financial Aid. Summer aid applications are usually accepted beginning in mid April. Consult the Financial Aid Office for the exact date. Since the pool of summer aid money is limited, you should apply as soon as the Financial Aid Office begins accepting applications. If you receive partial financial aid, then you are required to pay the difference between the full UC fees for the Global Seminar and your financial aid package.
Deferment of Student Loans
Since students participating on the Opportunities Abroad Program (OAP) are not enrolled at UCSD, you need to download a form and obtain the signature of an OAP staff member to prevent the Stafford loan or Perkins loans from entering into repayment. Follow these steps:
- Download the In-School Deferment Form or the Federal Perkins Request for Deferment.
- Have a staff member from the UCSD Programs Abroad Office fill in and sign "section 4: Authorized Official's Certification" or "Part II" of the Perkins form (allow up to 2 days for this).
- Complete and sign the student sections.
- Fax or mail the form to the lender.
Special Note for Summer Only Study Abroad Participants
If you participate in a summer only program, you may use any remaining aid from the previous academic year to help pay for your program expenses. Additional financial aid for summer programs may be available. Ask at Programs Abroad or the Financial Aid Office. Completion of the UCSD Summer Financial Aid application will be required. The application is usually available in April and must be returned by May 15.
