If I study abroad, will I be able to graduate on time?
Yes! Most students make regular progress toward their degrees while studying abroad. As you plan your study abroad experience, you will meet with academic advisors in your major and minor department(s) and your College to discuss how the courses you plan to take abroad will help you meet your degree requirements.
Can I study abroad if I am majoring in the sciences or engineering?
Absolutely! Students in all majors have access to excellent courses abroad. Laboratory work and field research programs provide unique opportunities to science students abroad.
Is study abroad affordable?
Definitely! Depending on where you choose to study, it can cost less to be abroad than to be at UCSD for a comparable period of time. You may use financial aid to fund approved academic programs abroad, and special study abroad scholarships are also available, whether or not you are a financial aid recipient.
Do I have to wait until my junior year to go abroad?
Definitely not! While many students still choose to go abroad as juniors, there are opportunities overseas for freshmen, sophomores and seniors. You may even decide to go abroad several times during your college career.
Do I need to know a foreign language well if I want to go to a country where the language is not English?
Not necessarily! Many opportunities exist for students at all language levels, from beginning to advanced.
When should I begin researching my options and planning for study abroad?
The sooner the better! Early investigation will enable you to find the programs best suited to your academic, career and personal goals, to complete any prerequisite courses, and to prepare yourself financially and personally for a successful experience abroad.
What will my UCSD transcript look like after my credit from abroad is posted?
Here is an example of OAP coursework on a UCSD transcript. Students who work with a PAO adviser and complete their OAP paperwork will have coursework from abroad posted on their transcript, the official record of academic accomplishments.
Please note, not all coursework is posted in this format. Grades from OAP are NOT posted to UCSD transcript.
